Regional pillar of Hydrogen Europe: the Green Metropolitan Region

The Green Metropolitan Region Arnhem – Nijmegen, in the East Netherlands, joined forces with European regions in Hydrogen Europe to foster the uptake and deployment of hydrogen technologies, an important step towards achieving the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality goals.

Hydrogen is enjoying a renewed and rapidly growing attention in Europe and around the world. Hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier and storage, and has many possible applications across industry, transport, power and buildings sectors. Most importantly, it does not emit CO2 and almost no air pollution when used. It thus offers a solution to decarbonise industrial processes and economic sectors where reducing carbon emissions is both urgent and hard to achieve. All this makes hydrogen essential to support the EU’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and for the global effort to implement the Paris Agreement while working towards zero pollution.

Hydrogen Europe

Hydrogen Europe is the leading organization representing European based companies and stakeholders that are committed to moving towards a (circular) carbon neutral economy. With more than 300 companies and 30 national associations as members, it encompasses the entire value chain of the European hydrogen and fuel cell ecosystem. Our vision is to propel global carbon neutrality by accelerating European hydrogen industry  as  the industrial key partner of the Clean Hydrogen partnership.

Think East Netherlands

As a partner of Think East Netherlands “Groene Metropoolregio Arnhem – Nijmegen” is strengthening the European positioning of East Netherlands: “Smart & Sustainable Industries, Think East Netherlands”, in the focus area smart energy solutions, such as green hydrogen.

Groene Metropoolregio

The Arnhem-Nijmegen Green Metropolitan Region is situated at the heart of a vast metropolitan area in eastern Netherlands. The region is flanked by the Randstad conglomeration in the west, the Flemish Diamond to the south and the Ruhr to the east. The region has a total population of more than 750.000 inhabitants and is combining its metropolitan, economic power, with sustainable and circular practices. Within the region, the Lifeport innovation network is working with The Economic Board to further strengthen the clusters Health and High Tech, Food and Energy.

The EU Office in Brussels has a brokerage role between the region and Brussels/Europe. In order to effectively promote the Arnhem-Nijmegen Green Metropolitan Region and find partners for European projects, we focus our work on the following themes:

  • Smart Energy
  • Circular Economy
  • Health & High Tech
  • Sustainable Mobility

In the field of Smart Energy (e.g. Green Hydrogen), the Green Metropolitan Area Arnhem-Nijmegen is active in the ‘‘European Hydrogen Valleys Platform’. Examples of succesful EU hydrogen projects are H2Nodes and HECTOR. These hydrogen projects were realised in close cooperation with the city of Arnhem, HAN University of Applied Sciences, the Economic Board, Kiemt and Think East Netherlands.

Future initiatives focus on all the knowledge and practice present in the region’s companies and knowledge institutes. Decentralised energy solutions like Energy Hubs, and innovation programmes like Connectr are the first priorities for finding EU support with the new partnership.
