CONCEPTS FOR A HEALTHY LIFE
The choice for this flagship shows that East Netherlands goes beyond merely generating expertise with respect to the issue of health and care. In East Netherlands, new knowledge, insights and techniques are used to develop concepts that have a wide range of applications in healthcare.
The focus areas within the Concepts for a Healthy Life flagship are:
- MedTech: Health Technology and Delivery Systems
technological base of drug-delivery, medical care and the social aspects
- Smart Health
remote digital software and hardware medical applications may include medical and care robotics, eHealth and medical sensors (chips) for connected health
- Prevention: e.g. Healthy Brain
further development of knowledge of the functioning of the human brain and the resulting application options
- Personalised Health and Nutrition
further development of the individual specificity of medical diagnostics, treatment and supervision
Strategic Investment Agenda
Examples are the East Netherlands initiatives around Healthy Brain including ParkinsonNet (Radboud University Medical Centre RUMC), Technical Medicine (UT) and Food for health (nutrition for the elderly, top athletes, etc.) (WUR, Saxion and HAN). Within this flagship a number of Centres of Expertise are operational: the HAN with the Rapid Recovery Centre and the Social Transition for Rural Areas Centre and the UoAS CHE Ede with Care 2.0 (CHE, UT, Saxion, HAN).
In addition, Health Valley links up SMEs to knowledge and the care market within this spearhead both on a national and an international level. The cooperation with the healthcare industry in test labs for example ensures that innovations actually reach the implementation phase.

TopFit
Under the name TopFit Impact Programme, the University of Twente, Wageningen University & Research, Radboud University and RadboudUMC join together in an impact programme aimed at preventing and reducing disease and the burden of disease.
Framework
Much progress has been made in recent years in understanding disease processes and the development of new treatment methods. At the same time, the realization that many diseases will remain incurable for the foreseeable future grows. Through smart integration of innovative technologies and knowledge about nutrition and health we can be one step ahead of disease and its burdens.
These integral solutions mean that there will be an ever more personal approach in healthcare. The payoff is a maximum increase in the quality of life of patients and the best perspective on affordable healthcare in an aging society. The goal of the TopFit programme is to contribute to controlling and limiting the cost of healthcare in the future, without making concessions to the quality of life of patients.
Impact
TopFit aspires to be a leading health impact programme on three levels: society & health, innovation & (regional) economy and science & technology. Therefore, the researchers work together with key partners in the east of the Netherlands.
