Food and Cognition : lifestyle & big data in MS
2021-05-27 @ 16:00 - 17:00
SESSION 8 (OF 8): THE ROLE OF LIFESTYLE AND BIG DATA IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)
MS is an inflammatory disease of the brain and typically affects young people between the ages of 20 and 40. Because the signal transmission in the brain is disrupted, a wide range of memory, concentration, movement and emotional problems can occur. Symptoms can appear in attacks lasting a few days to weeks or worsen permanently. There seems to be a role of lifestyle, such as certain foods, in reducing seizures. But much is still unknown. How can we research lifestyle in MS and can digital monitoring in the home situation with smart devices help? Can we also create algorithms from this “big data” to personally assist MS patients at home in their self-management? And what can we learn from the role of lifestyle and assistive technology in other inflammatory or neurodegenerative diseases? We will discuss these questions further with Bram den Teuling, co-founder of data science company Orikami, and MS researcher Marco Heerings of Radboudumc.
