The E6 project brings together nineteen organizations from five European countries, focusing on extending the lifespan of collected consumer electronics. Lead researcher Frank Stiksma from Saxion University explains that ecosystems involving local governments, waste collectors, and repair services are essential for this transition. In Apeldoorn, such an ecosystem is already being developed, where waste collectors and thrift stores are working together to repair and revalue discarded devices.Collaboration at a European level is crucial, as each region faces unique challenges. Stiksma notes that while the mindset is still “buy first” across Europe, countries like Belgium and France are testing innovative solutions, such as repair vouchers and tool libraries. By comparing these initiatives across different regions, the project hopes to identify what works best and scale those solutions.The E6 project, supported by the European Interreg fund, will test practical solutions in pilot programs across six regions. Partners from Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands will collaborate to build strong ecosystems that promote repair over replacement.Ultimately, the goal is to move away from the throwaway culture and help consumers and businesses embrace a repair-first mindset, laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future.
